Sounds kind of crazy doesn’t it? We really enjoy using our spa/hot tub in the freezing weather. There’s something about relishing in warm hydrotherapy while inhaling delicious aromatherapy spa salt scentshttps://www.waterschoice.com/aromatherapy-salts/.
Relax and Enjoy
All the while, relaxing and watching it snow while looking above to view the bright starry night (or sunlit day for that matter). But it’s true, sometimes certain situations warrant closing and winterizing your hot tub/spa.
A Few Tips
Here are a few tips from the experts at “Service Industry News”:
Hot tubs these days are well insulated and some manufacturers discourage winterization if it wasn’t properly closed. Internal plumbing and freeze-ups can make things difficult and expensive to fix.
Waters Choice Clean & Drain
It’s a good idea to purchase and use Waters Choice Clean and Drain before winterization. Clean & Drain is a very powerful spa purge product. We recommend that our customers purge their spas EVERY TIME they drain the water. By purging your hot tub, you’ll minimize start up issues and save time and money.
Spa/Hot Tub Plumbing – Bacteria
Spa plumbing is the perfect breeding ground for many different types of bacteria. No matter which system you use to maintain the water (we REALLY like Natural ENZYMES -wink wink), over time a buildup will develop in the pipes.
When you purge your spa with Clean & Drain, it removes these contaminants leaving your lines clean and your spa easier to maintain.
Another key point is to turn off power to your spa/hot tub. *Always make sure to consult your owners’ manual to learn how to turn off the circuit breaker for the hot tub’s power.*
Secondly, make sure to remove the hot tub cover and drain its drain line and submersible pump. Remove and clean the filter and store it in a dry place. Waters Choice never recommend storing a dirty filter.
Waters Choice Has Filters For YOU
In addition to this, if your hot tub has a blower, turn it on and make sure to clear out any water from the air channels. It’s a good idea to vacuum or mop out any standing water. Along with that, add non-toxic antifreeze that doesn’t contain ethanol which can damage rubber or synthetic seals.
Immediately, winterize any equipment and remove drain plugs. Loosen the unions of pumps and heaters. In fact, you might go ahead and store the pump somewhere warm where it won’t freeze.
Afterwards, cover your hot tub and strap it into place. Double check that the cover is in good shape and will not allow any water to seep into the hot tub. At the same time, check that the cover slopes toward the outside to shed any rain or snow.
Prevent Rodent Damage
Finally, secure the equipment doors against rodents that will often attempt to nest inside your hot tub. Rodents will chew through wires causing expensive damage.
