High school graduation and summer vacations are HERE! If you are like us, we love to take a vacation, in the heat of summer, somewhere with a swimming pool. But have you given any thought about if the unfamiliar pool water you are about to swim in might be CLEAN?
Here are a few things to keep in mind before you jump into an unfamiliar swimming pool and expose yourself to it’s water for a long period of time.
Unfortunately, we often find that public pools and even many private pools are not properly maintained. This can lead to unsanitary water that could actually be potentially dangerous. At Waters Choice, we highly suggest you use your FIVE SENSES to detect if a swimming pool is clean.
While many think that a swimming pool with a strong chemical odor means the water is clean and sanitized, the OPPOSITE is true. That strong chemical odor is NOT caused by chlorine itself, but how it’s reacting with pollutants. That strong smell in the pool is a sign of POLLUTANTS that may be causing a dangerous environment for you to swim in. If you smell an extremely strong chemical smell, stay away from that pool!
The swimming pool should have CLEAR, BLUE WATER that is free of debris. If the pool has a hint of green, it’s a sign of a pH imbalance that may leave water unsafe to swim in. Also, if it’s an outside pool, seeing a large amount of leaves, sticks or other debris means the chances of the pool’s maintenance schedule being neglected is pretty high. Make sure to give that pool a good visual inspection BEFORE you enter.
We know, it sounds a little crazy but if you’re wondering about the pool water, feel the tiles or the sides of the swimming pool. Do they feel smooth or slimy? Algae, dirt or other pollutants will cause the sides or tiles of the pool to feel slimy. This is a sure-fire way to detect if the pool is unclean.
Do you hear the pool equipment working while submerged in the water or around where the pump is? If you are in a clean pool, you’ll often hear the equipment working. A lack of sound could be another indication of a swimming pool that is not being properly maintained.
Just KIDDING! Don’t taste the water!
As humans, our five senses help us determine if the swimming pool we are about to enter is safe and properly maintained. TRUST your instincts and avoid water that could be full of pollution you cannot see.
