A Cyanuric acid (CYA) shortage is looming, according to Mr. Rudy Stankowitz’s article in the November 2021 issue of The Pool News. This will affect many swimming pool owners and pool professionals who use traditional chemicals to balance their pool water and keep it sanitized. The GREAT news is that Waters Choice Pure Enzymes are an EXCELLENT alternative to chlorine and our loyal customers will attest to this fact.

The Tie Between Thermal Decomposition and Cyanuric Acid (CYA)
CYA is manufactured using a thermal decomposition method of Urea and uric acid. Mass production of Urea in the industrial quantities needed by the world today require a massive amount of energy. By the same token, huge increases in natural gas prices across Europe are forcing plants to shut down Urea plants and as a result; driving the cost of this chemical to its highest price in over a decade.
Additionally, the energy crisis has reached China which means they’ll keep what they manufacture to themselves, creating an even larger shortage crisis for us in the United States. Afterall, China is currently the largest exporter of Urea.
Where Does This Leave Us?
Well, according to Mr. Stankowitz, the United States is one of the top five importers of Urea in the world. Although the U.S. is one of four nations that account for 10 percent of the world’s cyanuric acid production, China is the foremost manufacturer yielding 75 percent of the world’s supply.
How Does This Affect You?
Cyanuric acid (CYA), also known as chlorine stabilizer is a chemical that helps stabilize the chlorine in your pool. It protects your chlorine from breaking down under the sun’s UV rays. The right levels of CYA help your chlorine last longer, which means your sanitizer can continue to kill bacteria, contaminants, and algae.
But having too much or too little cyanuric acid in your pool can reduce your chlorine’s effectiveness and even damage your equipment.
No Erea Equals No CYA and That Means No Trichlor Chlorine Tabs
In other words, Trichlor Chlorine tabs cannot be manufactured without CYA; plain and simple. For this reason and combined with the chlorine shortage in the United States because of the fire at BioLab, caused by Hurricane Laura, traditional chemical users would be wise to find an alternative.
Waters Choice Pure Enzymes for Pools
Don’t panic! Adding Waters Choice Pure Enzymes for Pools is an excellent alternative to the Trichlor tabs you’ve been using in your swimming pool. In other words, with enzymes in your pool water, a healthy living environment is established allowing you to use less chemicals. It’s safe to say that many of the chemicals we use in pools are harsh and cause our skin and hair to dry out, our eyes to burn, and give off strong odors.
When we add Waters Choice Pure Enzymes, we eliminate some chemicals and cut back on others. We find that these problems go away, and many positive things happen. Keep in mind that you must keep your chlorine level between .5 to 1 ppm when using our enzymes but this dramatically decreases the use of chlorine compared to what you used previously.
In addition, you'll still need to make sure to keep your pool water balanced by testing the waters pH and alkalinity. Muriatic Acid can lower pH and alkalinity in your pool and soda ash (sodium carbonate) can increase the pH in your water. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) will increase alkalinity. Don't forget to check pool water for phosphates as you may need a phosphate remover. We at Waters Choice recommend checking for phosphates in the Spring, mid-simmer, and Fall before closing your pool. **Click HERE for a great blog post about testing for phosphates.
