My Hot Tub Won't Heat!

In our opinion at Waters Choice, when your hot tub goes cold the most common culprit is the filter.  When your filter gets clogged, the heater shuts off because it needs water flow to be able to operate properly.

In fact, pleated filters are designed to be cleaned regularly and last about a year. Our filters are made of a heavier filter media for improved filtration and longer life.  So, pop out your filter and give it a thorough rinse and soak in a cleaning solution. As a side note, make sure you’re cleaning your hot tub or spa filters weekly for the first 6 weeks when new to using our enzyme product. Then clean filters twice a month after that depending on your hot tub usage.

Disposable Filters!

However, if filter cleaning is not on your priority list Waters Choice carries a DISPOSABLE hot tub filter! Yes!! Depending on hot tub bather load, it can last up to 3 months. Click HERE for more information and our BLOG post.

It’s safe to use a garden hose with a good nozzle when cleaning your hot tub or spa filter. If, after cleaning them and they do not come back to white or if they have any kind of odor; soak for 1 hour in 1 cup of bleach or vinegar, per filter, and enough water to cover the filter. Then rinse and place them back into your filtration area.

Don't Forget A Spare Filter

Equally important, it’s a good practice to have a spare hot tub and spa filter on hand and then rotate them. Absolutely do NOT let a filter dry dirty, it’s difficult to get it clean again.

So, if cleaning the filter does not bring back the heat, turn the heater off for about 15 minutes.  If it’s still not working when you turn it back on, it’s most likely time for a service call.

Scale Buildup

Another culprit and often another common problem regarding heater failure is scale buildup on the heater core or element.  Make sure to keep your spa water balanced in order to avoid this.  In fact, scale build up on the heater element of only 1/20” can reduce the heater’s efficiency by 40 percent! Always make sure the pH in your hot tub and spa water is balanced.

Balance Hot Tub Water Regularly

As a matter of fact, keeping your hot tub water clear and healthy is really important. Using our enzymes is a perfect first step to this.  But to ensure the water in your hot tub stays balanced, water testing strips are a must as well as pH Up and pH Down.  Click HERE for a great blog post about water testing strips and HERE for another post about the importance of testing your hot tub water.
