What does the word buoyancy mean to you? If you're like a few of us at Waters Choice, you're packing a few extra pounds around the middle (sorry guys). Buoyancy can mean you have to work a little harder to SIT DOWN in your hot tub or swim spa. However, the very thing that can be such a hassle when wanting to relax, can actually work to your benefit when exercising in your swim spa!

Believe it or not, hydro-fitness offers support and resistance so that you can achieve a great workout. This is fantastic news! But are there ways you can switch it up a little and change up the WAY you exercise in your swim spa? The answer is ... ABSOLUTELY! Read on.
Water Fitness Equipment
After doing a bit of research online, we found that there are actually many things you can do to help achieve a fitness level you weren't able to obtain previously.
Here is a quick list of ideas that you could use:
- Resistance Tubing
- Rowing Bars
- Dumbells
- Ankle Fins
- Water Aerobics
Water Aerobics
Water Aerobics have been known to be a very popular type of exercise for those who are recovering from surgery or have joint pain. It can be an effective way to improve your fitness, build strength and increase your mobility without the impact of land-based activities. Furthermore, buoyancy eliminates the stress on joints and water's resistance makes even equipment-free moves harder. The good news is that you can enjoy this in the convenience and privacy of your backyard oasis.
Resistance Tubing
When attached to a steel bar in your swim spa, resistance tubing can be used for upper body and core exercises, uniquely challenging your balance and coordination. We suggest checking with your local swim spa dealer to see if they offer a hydro exercise kit that comes with a set of resistance tubing. Quick examples of exercise done with tubing include standing row and variations, chest press, tricep extensions, overhead press and bicep curls.
Rowing Bars and Aquatic Dumbbells
Cardiovascular or strength based exercises are accomplished easily by rowing and doing chest presses. Dumbbells are used for many levels of exercise and according to our research, are ideal for general fitness, strength, speed, and endurance. Try bicep curls, chest presses, front raises and tricep pushdowns when using dumbbells.
Ankle Fins
Ankle fins are an aquatic exercise that helps target your lower body. Moreover, they're often called cuffs or fins and they are ideal for resistance conditioning. Leg swings, kicks, marching, lunges and walking are a few examples of exercises done with ankle fins.
Aqua Jogging
Equally important, aqua jogging allows you to mimic the motion of running without impact on knees and hips. Water running helps build and maintain cardio fitness but it can be challenging to get into the groove. However, there are underwater treadmills available for those who'd enjoy an alternative to pool running. Check them out at your local swim spa dealer.
Many swim spas offer a great workout by simply running against the current. For example, simply adjusting the speed of the current and bringing knees higher, your "run" can be more challenging, getting your heart rate up without the cost of an aquatic treadmill.
Switching over to Waters Choice SWIM SPA Enzymes
If you're switching over to Waters Choice enzymes from a chlorine or bromine based system, make sure your water is clean/clear and less than 1 year old. Then simply let your chlorine/bromine level come down to 0 before introducing our enzymes.
On another note, if you're switching over from or are still using a Salt Generator, simply turn you generator down to the lowest setting. Your plates and equipment will last longer using Waters Choice enzymes.
Additional Benefits
Here is a fun fact! When you use Waters Choice Enzymes in your swim spa, you can go 3-5 years before you need to clean and drain, as opposed to every year with a traditional chemical system. This saves you time, money, and energy. Are you new to the idea of purging your swim spa's plumbing? Click HERE for more information, you'll be glad you did.
