Water Care – Balancing Hot Tub pH & Alkalinity

The great people at Waters Choice are giving me another opportunity to take over the blog to answer one of the most popular questions about water care. (Honestly, I’m pretty sure they’re allowing me to address this topic because I’ve been there folks, and I’ve called Waters Choice A LOT!)

How Do I Take Care of My Hot Tub Water??

Coming from a place of zero knowledge regarding hot tub water care and then later a swimming pool, I have probably set a world record of asking Tom (owner of Waters Choice) this very same question.

They say everybody has to be good at something; well I was good at dialing Waters Choice’s phone number.

I most likely called them EVERY time my water was cloudy or out of balance, asking the all too popular question of WHY?!

Have You Tested Your Water?

Each time I called for help, Tom would nicely ask me the same thing, “have you tested your water?” and “what does the test strip say your pH level is?”

I would slap my forehead, tell him to hang on while I dropped the phone (yes, a landline phone …) and ran outside to dip a test strip into the water. Then I would rush BACK to the phone, out of breath and I’d tell him what the test strip looked like. The next question he would ask was, “what does the test strip say your Alkalinity is?”

Tom would patiently explain AGAIN that I needed to add either Waters Choice pH Up or pH Down (whatever was needed at that moment) to adjust and balance my hot tub water.

Afterwards I’d hang up the phone, run back outside to add said product, wait a few minutes and then test the water again. Minutes later I would call Tom and tell him how my water hadn’t changed.

Afterall, I wanted an instant miracle and I wanted it NOW! Sigh …

Trust Your Water Test Strips

Time and time again, Tom would remind me that water takes TIME to change and to continue doing the aforementioned procedure. After a while I FINALLY understood and learned to balance my water successfully while being PATIENT. I learned that water care is not a quick process. Depending on the situation, it could take longer than expected to balance water.

Naturally High pH

Additionally, it’s important to add that I learned the water we used to fill our hot tub has a naturally high pH level. (Yours may not be …) I learned to take this into consideration when balancing its water. Each time I added water, I automatically knew that I would need to add pH Down. By adding a capful at a time. I also learned how to keep our hot tub water balanced and how to recognize when my water needed a few more enzyme drops. (We'll save that lesson for a future blog post)

What is Waters Choice pH Up?

Waters Choice pH Up is a fast dissolving granular product that will increase the pH & Alkalinity in your hot tub/spa or small pool. It’s important to maintain your pH between 7.2 – 7.6.

When pH falls outside of these ranges, the water will be acidic and can cause skin and eye irritations. It’ll also cause corrosion of equipment and scaling in the water (sand paper sides).

What Is Waters Choice pH Down?

Waters Choice pH Down is a granular pH decreaser that is readily water soluble as well.

It’s important to maintain pH in the recommended range of 7.2 – 7.6. If the pH of your water is high, the warm water accelerates scale formation on the sides of your hot tub/spa and heater elements.

When this happens, water tends to be cloudy and eye irritation may develop as well as scale build-up may occur.

pH and Alkalinity Go Hand In Hand

It’s true, our water’s pH and Alkalinity go hand in hand. Once water’s pH is in the normal range on a test strip, Alkalinity will follow. Sometimes it can take additional time, but it WILL balance out. So relax and wait, it’ll happen.

We’ve Been In Your Shoes
